Not all Machu Picchu tickets have the same availability. In 2026, Peru’s Ministry of Culture distributes admission quotas among 10 different routes, and the number of tickets available varies depending on the route, entry schedule, and season.
For example, the Route 3-B Realeza Designed can have up to 1,100 online tickets available per day during high season, while Huchuy Picchu has a much smaller online allocation and is only available during high season.
Therefore, if you have a specific route in mind, it is not a good idea to wait until the last minute to purchase your ticket.
In this guide, we show you the official 2026 quotas, which routes have the lowest availability, and which ones require more planning.
1. How Many People Can Enter Machu Picchu Per Day?
The maximum daily capacity of the Machupicchu Archaeological Site for 2026 is 4,500 visitors per day during regular season and up to 5,600 visitors per day during specific high-season dates.
According to Ministerial Resolution No. 285-2025-MC, the dates with a maximum capacity of 5,600 visitors are:
- January 1, 2026
- April 2–5, 2026
- June 19–November 2, 2026
- December 30–31, 2026
The rest of the year has a maximum capacity of up to 4,500 visitors per day.
But there is an even more important detail: not all visitors can choose any of the 10 routes.
During regular season, only six routes operate:
- 1-A: Machupicchu Mountain
- 1-B: Upper Terrace
- 2-A: Classic Designed
- 2-B: Lower Terrace
- 3-A: Waynapicchu Mountain
- 3-B: Realeza Designed

2. How Many Tickets Does Each Route Have in 2026?
This is the difference that really matters when you are looking for a ticket.
The following table shows the daily quotas allocated to online sales, according to the official 2026 dynamic capacity system. These figures do not include tickets sold through the in-person sales system.

During regular season, the online quotas for the six available routes add up to 3,500 tickets per day:
- 1-B: 850
- 1-A: 300
- 2-A: 800
- 2-B: 400
- 3-B: 800
- 3-A: 350

3. Which Machu Picchu Ticket Is the Hardest to Get?
There is an important distinction to make here.
The route with the fewest tickets is not necessarily the one that sells out the fastest.
For example, Huchuy Picchu has only 40 online tickets per day, but it also has a different level of demand than much more popular routes.
Therefore, Peru’s Ministry of Culture does not publish an official ranking showing which route sells out first. What we can identify are the routes that combine low availability, popularity, or a more limited operating period.
1. Huchuy Picchu (3-D)
With only 40 online tickets per day, this is the route with the smallest online allocation among the 10 routes in 2026.
It is also available only during high season.

2. Great Cavern (3-C)
The Great Cavern Route has approximately 75 online tickets per day during high season.
Like Huchuy Picchu, it does not operate during regular season.
Therefore, if you want this route, your window for finding availability is much more limited than for a route such as 1-B or 2-A. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
3. Inka Bridge (1-D)
The Inka Bridge Route has 80 online tickets per day during high season.
It is also available only on dates classified as high season.

4. Intipunku Gate (1-C)
Intipunku has 130 online tickets per day during high season and is not available during regular season.
It is particularly sensitive to availability because you can only purchase it during the dates when this route is operating. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
What about Huayna Picchu?
Route 3-A, Waynapicchu Mountain, has 350 online tickets per day.
It is not the route with the fewest tickets, but it is one of the options that many travelers specifically seek because of the hike up Waynapicchu. Therefore, if this mountain is your priority, it is better not to wait until just a few days before your visit.
4. Routes with the Highest Availability
If your priority is simply getting a ticket and you have some flexibility regarding the route, there are options with considerably larger online allocations.
1-B: Upper Terrace
It has 850 online tickets per day throughout the year.
It is one of the routes with the highest availability and belongs to Circuit 1 Panoramic.

3-B: Realeza Designed
It has 800 online tickets per day during regular season and up to 1,100 during high season.

2-A: Classic Designed
It has 800 online tickets per day during regular season and 1,000 during high season.
It is another route with a large ticket allocation and forms part of Circuit 2 Machupicchu Classic. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
5. Regular Season vs. High Season: Why Does It Matter?
The season significantly changes the available routes.
Regular season
The maximum capacity is 4,500 visitors per day, and six routes are available:
- 1-A Machupicchu Mountain
- 1-B Upper Terrace
- 2-A Classic Designed
- 2-B Lower Terrace
- 3-A Waynapicchu Mountain
- 3-B Realeza Designed
High season
Capacity can increase to 5,600 visitors per day, and all 10 routes become available.
The additional routes are:
- 1-C Intipunku Gate
- 1-D Inka Bridge
- 3-C Great Cavern
- 3-D Huchuy Picchu

6. How Far in Advance Should You Buy Each Ticket?
There is no official number of days established by Peru’s Ministry of Culture that guarantees availability for a particular route.
Availability changes depending on the date, entry schedule, season, and demand.
Therefore, rather than presenting a number as an official rule, we recommend using the following as a practical planning reference:

7. What If Your Preferred Route Is Sold Out?
If your first-choice route is unavailable, you do not necessarily have to cancel your Machu Picchu visit.
Change your date
Check the days immediately before and after your preferred date.
Availability can vary considerably from one day to another.
Choose another route within the same circuit
If your first option is unavailable, check which other routes in the same circuit still have tickets.
For example, if you are looking for a Circuit 2 experience, compare availability between routes 2-A and 2-B.
Focus on your actual goal
Ask yourself what you really want to experience.
Do you mainly want to explore the archaeological site?
Do you want panoramic views?
Do you want to climb a mountain?
Do you specifically want a particular route?
The answer can help you find an alternative that better matches your priorities.
Check the in-person ticket system
The Ministry of Culture maintains an in-person ticket sales system of up to 1,000 tickets per day in Machupicchu Pueblo.
These tickets must be purchased in person and allow entry to Machu Picchu the day after purchase. Because availability is limited, the Ministry recommends checking availability before going to the ticket office. (machupicchu.gob.pe)

8. Our Recommendation
So, which Machu Picchu ticket is the hardest to get?
There is no single official answer.
If we look exclusively at the number of online tickets, Huchuy Picchu (3-D) is the route with the smallest allocation, with approximately 40 online tickets per day during high season.
However, if we are talking about the practical difficulty of getting a specific route, demand, travel date, and the fact that some routes operate only during high season also matter.
That is why the smartest strategy is to decide which route you want first and then organize the rest of your trip around that ticket.
If you want Huchuy Picchu, Great Cavern, Inka Bridge, or Intipunku, pay special attention to the dates when these routes are available.
And if your main priority is simply visiting Machu Picchu, you will have more options if you are flexible with your route and travel date.
