Itinerary

Cusco - Pallaypunchu

4:00 a.m. we’ll pick you up from your hotel in our tourist transport for a 3-hour drive to the community of Layo.

After arriving in the district of Layo, our transport will take us 20 more minutes to the starting point of the hike.

The hike is a 3-hour ascent; the time will depend a lot on each person’s physical condition. As we ascend, we’ll have an amazing view of “Lake Layo” and the surrounding mountains.

Upon reaching the esplanade at the foot of the mountain, you’ll already have an impressive view of Pallay Punchu.

At Pallay Punchu we’ll have time to take photos and enjoy the scenery, then descend and return along the same path.

7:00 p.m. Arrival in Cusco, dropping passengers off near the Plaza de Armas.

While Vinicunca features gentle undulations and layered colors across an open valley, Pallay Punchu (located in Layo) stands out for its sharp, pointed geological formations that resemble the edge of an Andean poncho (pallay). The visual contrast is not only about color, but also about the rocky texture dropping dramatically toward the immense Langui-Layo Lake.
It is located in the district of Layo, in the province of Canas, south of Cusco. The journey by road is long, taking approximately 3.5 to 4 hours each way. It is a full-day tour with an early-morning departure (around 3:00 a.m.), allowing visitors to discover one of the least developed areas of the southern tourist circuit.
The final section of the hike follows a rocky ridge. Although the trail is safe when walking carefully and following the guide’s instructions, it is not recommended for people who suffer from severe vertigo or acrophobia, as there are steep drops on both sides of the mountain ridge.
The best time is during the dry season (May to October). With no snow cover or dense fog, the red, purple, and magenta tones of the sharp ridges contrast strongly with the deep blue of Langui-Layo Lake in the background.
Because it is an emerging tourist destination and the rocky ridge has rugged terrain, horse services are limited or unavailable on certain sections. The entire hike should be planned to be completed on foot, requiring moderate to good physical fitness.
The hike is not extremely long in terms of distance (approximately 3 to 4 km round trip, depending on the parking point), but the altitude exceeds 4,700 meters above sea level and the initial slope is steep. The main challenge comes from the thin air and loose rocky terrain.
Tourism in Pallay Punchu is rural and still emerging. Food and visitor services are provided directly by families from the communities of Layo. You will not find luxury tourist restaurants, but rather comforting local cuisine prepared with ingredients from the area, such as trout, native potatoes, and quinoa.
The difficulty of the Pallay Punchu Mountain tour is moderate. We recommend acclimatizing for at least 1 day in Cusco beforehand to better enjoy the experience and avoid altitude discomfort.
