If you are planning to climb Huayna Picchu, there is something important you should know before buying your ticket: the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket does not allow you to explore every sector of the citadel.

In 2026, access to Huayna Picchu corresponds to Route 3-A: Huayna Picchu Mountain Route, within Circuit 3, also known as the Royalty Circuit. This ticket combines the corresponding circuit route with access to Huayna Picchu Mountain, but it does not automatically include the routes of Circuit 1 or Circuit 2. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
So, if your main goal is to take the classic panoramic photograph from the Guardian’s Hut or explore the main ceremonial areas covered by Circuit 2, you need to choose a different route.
Updated September 2026: the ticket sales and validation system for Machu Picchu was modified through Ministerial Resolution No. 334-2026-MC. Always check the current conditions before purchasing your ticket. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
What exactly is the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket?
The ticket commonly known as Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu currently corresponds to Route 3-A: Huayna Picchu Mountain Route, within Circuit 3, the Royalty Circuit.
Since June 1, 2024, the Machu Picchu visitor system has been organized into three circuits and ten routes. Route 3-A is specifically the route that allows visitors to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Do not confuse it with:
- Route 1-A: Machupicchu Mountain Route.
- Route 3-C: Great Cavern or Temple of the Moon Route.
- Route 3-D: Huchuypicchu Route.
- Routes 2-A and 2-B: routes belonging to Circuit 2 or Machupicchu Classic.
Each route requires the corresponding ticket. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
What does the Huayna Picchu ticket include?
The Route 3-A circuit
The ticket includes the route established for the Huayna Picchu Mountain Route, which passes through different sectors belonging to Circuit 3.
The official map for Route 3-A identifies the following points along the route:
- Lower Platform.
- Upper Platform.
- Dry Moat.
- Temple of the Sun viewpoint.
- Granite Chaos.
- Temple Plaza.
- Intiwatana Pyramid.
- Sacred Rock.
- Twelve Openings.
- Eastern Qolqas.
- Water Mirrors Complex.
- Temple of the Condor.
- Pisonay Plaza.
- Archaeological Reserve. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Important: the fact that a place appears along the route does not necessarily mean visitors can enter every enclosure or approach every structure. Some areas have access restrictions, and visitor conditions may change for conservation purposes.
The climb to Huayna Picchu Mountain
The main attraction of this ticket is access to Huayna Picchu Mountain, following the designated and controlled trail managed by the Ministry of Culture.
In 2026, Huayna Picchu reopened to visitors on July 1, following conservation and maintenance work carried out during June. The work included maintenance of stairways, retaining walls, drainage systems, and vegetation removal affecting archaeological structures. (culturacusco.gob.pe)
The official map for Route 3-A establishes a maximum stay of 6 hours. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
What does the Huayna Picchu ticket NOT include?
This is where most of the confusion comes from.
❌ The classic photograph from the Guardian’s Hut
The 3-A ticket is not part of Circuit 1, which is the panoramic circuit.
Therefore, if your priority is getting the classic Machu Picchu photograph from the Guardian’s Hut area, you need to consider one of the Circuit 1 routes, depending on availability. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
❌ The complete Circuit 2 experience
Purchasing Route 3-A does not allow you to switch to Circuit 2 afterward.
Circuit 2 includes:
- Route 2-A: Designed Route
- Route 2-B: Lower Terrace Route
These routes correspond to what is commonly called Machupicchu Classic and require the corresponding ticket, subject to availability. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
❌ Machupicchu Mountain
Machupicchu Mountain has its own route:
Route 1-A: Machupicchu Mountain Route.
Therefore, it is not included in the 3-A Huayna Picchu ticket. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
❌ Huchuypicchu
Huchuypicchu corresponds to Route 3-D, available during the high season.
It is not part of Route 3-A. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
❌ The Great Cavern or Temple of the Moon
The Great Cavern corresponds to Route 3-C and has its own ticket.
It is not automatically included with Route 3-A. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
❌ Intipunku and the Inca Bridge
Access to these locations corresponds to:
- Route 1-C: Intipunku Route.
- Route 1-D: Inca Bridge Route.
Both routes are available during the high season and require selecting the corresponding route. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
❌ Train, bus, meals, accommodation, or tour services
The Machu Picchu ticket covers entry to the Llaqta and the selected route.
It does not automatically include:
- Train transportation to or from Machu Picchu Pueblo.
- Bus transportation between Machu Picchu Pueblo and the archaeological site.
- Meals.
- Accommodation.
- Private transportation.
- A privately hired tour guide.
These services are arranged separately.
Is the Temple of the Moon included with Huayna Picchu?
No.
This is one of the most common sources of confusion because, under the previous visitor system, the Great Cavern or Temple of the Moon was associated with the Huayna Picchu experience.
Under the current circuit and route system, the Great Cavern corresponds to Route 3-C of Circuit 3 and is offered as an independent route during the high season. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
For 2026, the high season includes the period from June 19 through November 2. During this period, the additional routes established by the Ministry of Culture are available. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
Therefore, if you want to visit the Great Cavern, do not assume that the Route 3-A Huayna Picchu ticket is enough.
What about the Intiwatana?
This point deserves clarification because conflicting information can be found online.
The official documentation for Route 3-A includes the Intiwatana Pyramid as part of the route. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
However, the fact that the route passes through the Intiwatana sector does not mean that visitors have unrestricted access to every area.
The visitor regulations require travelers to follow their selected circuit and respect areas that are closed, marked, or restricted for conservation purposes. These restrictions may change according to the conservation needs of Machupicchu. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
For this reason, the most accurate way to describe it is that Route 3-A passes through the Intiwatana Pyramid sector, while access to specific areas remains subject to the restrictions in force on the day of your visit.

The distribution of routes and their corresponding attractions is established by the Ministry of Culture. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Huayna Picchu ticket requirements and restrictions
The ticket is personal
Since September 2026, the regulations establish that tickets can be purchased directly and personally by visitors or through travel agencies and tourism operators registered with the Cusco DDC, using the authorized official platforms or authorized in-person sales points.
The ticket is nominative and requires the visitor’s identification details. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
The ticket is valid only for:
- The selected date.
- The selected entry time.
- The selected circuit.
- The selected route.
- The person named on the ticket.
The regulations establish that the date cannot be changed and the ticket holder’s name cannot be modified, except for the exceptional correction of a passport number in cases of evident material error. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
Is there a minimum age of 12 for Huayna Picchu?
We do not recommend publishing that there is currently a 12-year minimum age for Huayna Picchu.
The official 2026 tariff documentation for Route 3-A includes a category for children from 3 to 17 years old, while children under 3 enter free of charge. Minors must be accompanied by an adult responsible for their care and safety. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
Therefore, the statement found on some older websites that “Huayna Picchu is only for visitors over 12” should not be presented as a current rule without a specific official provision supporting it.
Is a tour guide mandatory?
The current regulations recommend that visitors entering the Llaqta be accompanied by a tour guide to contribute to heritage conservation and visitor management.
However, Article 17.1 of the current regulations does not state that visitors must hire a guide as a general condition for entry. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
For this reason, it is better not to state that “a guide is mandatory” as a general rule.
How much does the Huayna Picchu ticket cost in 2026?
For 2026, the Ministry of Culture establishes the following promotional rates for Route 3-A: Huayna Picchu Mountain Route for Peruvian nationals, foreign residents in Peru, and citizens of the Andean Community:
| Category | 2026 promotional rate |
|---|---|
| General admission | S/ 112 |
| Higher education student | S/ 80 |
| Children aged 3 to 17 | S/ 80 |
| Children under 3 | Free admission |
These promotional rates apply to visitors who meet the conditions established in Ministerial Resolution No. 284-2025-MC. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
For other visitors, the general rate established for Route 3-A is S/ 200, according to the applicable tariff. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
Frequently asked questions about the Huayna Picchu ticket
Does the Huayna Picchu ticket include Machu Picchu?
Yes, but it is important to understand what that means.

It does not mean that you can freely explore every circuit at Machu Picchu. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Can I take the classic Machu Picchu photo with the Huayna Picchu ticket?
That is not the route designed for the classic panoramic photograph from the Guardian’s Hut.
For that experience, you need to choose one of the Circuit 1 – Panoramic routes, subject to availability. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Can I visit the Temple of the Moon with the Huayna Picchu ticket?
No. The Great Cavern corresponds to Route 3-C, which is separate from Route 3-A. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Can I visit Machupicchu Mountain with the same ticket?
No. Machupicchu Mountain corresponds to Route 1-A. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
Can I visit Huchuypicchu?
Not with Route 3-A. Huchuypicchu corresponds to Route 3-D. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
How long can I stay with the Huayna Picchu ticket?

However, you must follow the entry time and conditions stated on your ticket, as well as the instructions provided by site staff during your visit.
Is the Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum included?
The museum has access conditions separate from the Llaqta admission ticket. Under the September 2026 regulatory changes, the Ministry of Culture states that admission to the Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum is free between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
Where can I buy the ticket?
The current regulations establish that tickets can be purchased through the official TuBoleto platform or at authorized in-person sales points operated by the Cusco DDC. (transparencia.cultura.gob.pe)
Is Huayna Picchu worth choosing?
The Huayna Picchu ticket is designed for visitors who want to combine their visit to the Llaqta with the climb to Huayna Picchu.
Its main feature is precisely the mountain experience. However, it is important to choose it knowing that it does not replace Circuit 1 or Circuit 2.
If your main goal is:
Climb Huayna Picchu:
→ Choose Route 3-A.
Get the classic panoramic photograph:
→ Check the available options in Circuit 1.
Explore Machupicchu Classic:
→ Check Route 2-A or 2-B.
Visit the Great Cavern or Temple of the Moon:
→ Check Route 3-C, available during the high season.
Climb Huchuypicchu:
→ Check Route 3-D, available during the high season. (machupicchu.gob.pe)
The right choice depends on which experience you want to prioritize, because each ticket corresponds to a specific route and is not a general admission ticket for the entire Inca citadel.
If you have questions before purchasing your ticket, Machupicchu Luna Tours can help you identify which route fits your itinerary and explain exactly what each ticket includes.
